This truly unique boutique hotel sits on the shores of Lake Malawi, built in the form of a castle complete with battlements, turrets, and a drawbridge. Constructed over seven years to an exceptionally high standard, it stands as the largest building within a 100 km radius — a striking local landmark.
Conceived, funded, and brought to life by the current owners, the hotel represents a long-held dream to create meaningful, long-term employment in the area and to share the economic benefits of tourism with the local community.
The hotel is located next to the village of Kachere and enjoys 110 metres of sandy beachfront along the crystal-clear waters of Lake Malawi. Life in the village continues around the lodge and along the public beach, where most of the proud staff members originate.
Set within a four-acre estate, the hotel offers 13 en-suite guest rooms, including four spacious suites. Two suites feature balconies and private rooftop terraces, each equipped with a bed for enjoying the night sky. All rooms open directly onto either the pool area or the beach.
Guests can stroll along the battlements for stunning views or enjoy a movie under the stars on the rooftop. A central swimming pool with a swim-up bar forms the heart of the hotel. Rooms are thoughtfully arranged around the pool to provide a tranquil atmosphere for families.
Hidden within one of the turrets is a full-size squash court and a warm-up gym, offering guests a chance to stay active during their stay.
The hotel also caters to campers with a large campsite featuring five barbecue areas — each with lighting, running water, and a braai/barbecue. Eco-friendly showers and toilets are discreetly tucked into a bamboo plantation.
The owners’ residence is integrated into the main building and connects directly to the hotel’s large kitchen. It includes two en-suite bedrooms, a spacious lounge with a balcony, and a luxurious double bathroom. This section of the building also houses two workshops and a double garage with an inspection pit.
This iconic hotel is well-established and widely recognised as the best private hotel in northern Malawi. It was selected to host the renowned Lake of Stars Festival in 2019, welcoming over 1,000 guests in one weekend. The business was profitable before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The current owners are retiring and are willing to provide up to six months of handover support to ensure a smooth transition for new owners.
While currently run as a boutique hotel, this distinctive property would also be ideal as a private residence or headquarters for a charity, NGO, or foundation.
